OnStar customers receive an insurance discount for enrolling in the Low-Mileage Discount program

The Low Mileage-Discount is one of the first  Pay-As-You-Go insurance programs in the U.S., leveraging state-of-the-art technology using OnStar  to allow customers who drive fewer miles to benefit from a substantial insurance discount. Eligible active OnStar subscribers sign up to save on their auto insurance premiums if they drive less than 15,000 miles annually.

Information sent from OnStar to GMAC Insurance pertains solely to mileage, and no additional data is gathered or used for any other purpose. Customers who drive more than 15,000 miles per year are not penalized, and all OnStar customers receive an insurance discount simply for having an active OnStar subscription.

With all the money drivers save by signing up for the Low Mileage-Discount - which can be up to 54 percent ^* based on the number of miles driven - the OnStar subscription can pay for itself in some instances, while giving drivers the added benefits of security and safety that comes with OnStar telematics technology.

The Low Mileage-Discount is an opt-in program and uses less invasive technologies than many other insurers. With the subscriber's permission, the odometer reading from his or her monthly OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics email is forwarded to GMAC Insurance. Based on those readings (and no other information), the company will decrease an auto insurance premium using insurance discount tiers corresponding to miles driven.
