National Driving Survey Indicates Americans Plan to Drive Less in 2009

GMAC Insurance survey indicates that Americans who drive less would benefit from Pay-As-You-Go Insurance

Planning to drive less? According to a national driving survey by GMAC Insurance, approximately 30 percent of participants reported they plan on driving less in the following 12 months.

The survey, which polled over 5,000 licensed Americans, only further confirms what industry experts have been predicting as part of the 2009 driving forecast: less is more. According to the Federal Highway Administration, within the past 13 months, Americans have traveled upward of 112 billion fewer miles.

The GMAC Insurance survey indicated that consumers’ reasons for driving less ranged from worry over the economy (74 percent), to reducing financial costs (24 percent) to lessening environmental impacts (33 percent). Twenty-six percent of respondents indicated they were planning to drive less to maintain the value of their vehicle and 11 percent of respondents said they planned to drive less to receive a discount on their auto insurance.

Whatever the reason, GMAC Insurance wants to reward drivers who are actively changing their driving habits and becoming more economically and eco-friendly by offering a Pay-As-You-Go insurance program.

It just makes sense. Pay-As-You-Go insurance programs are a great way for those who have already adopted a new driving lifestyle to reap the benefits of an insurance discount on auto insurance premiums. According to the GMAC Insurance survey, one in three drivers (35 percent) would enroll in a Pay-As-You-Go insurance program if their auto insurance company offered one.

To enroll in the GMAC Insurance Low-Mileage Discount, which is offered in 35 states across the nation, drivers simply opt-in and let the savings begin. The insurance discount is available to all eligible and active OnStar subscribers who drive less than 15,000 miles annually. Based on the number of miles driven, those who drive even less could save up to 54 percent^* on their auto insurance.

Also, unlike other Pay-As-You-Go insurance programs, the GMAC Insurance Low-Mileage Discount uses OnStar telematics technology to only capture the number of miles driven. No other information is used or captured by GMAC Insurance for any other purpose. 

Additionally, customers who end up driving more than 15,000 miles per year are not penalized by GMAC Insurance’s Pay-As-You-Go insurance - all OnStar customers still receive an insurance discount simply for having an active OnStar subscription, even if they are not eligible for the Low-Mileage Discount.
